Why Market Fit Matters More Than Product in Asian Technology Ventures
By Lewis Miller
International technology founders often assume that a strong product will find its market in Asia the way it did at home. In practice, the region rewards businesses that treat distribution, payment behaviour and local relevance as first-order product decisions, not afterthoughts.
Markets within markets
Asia is not one technology market. Thailand, China, Singapore, Vietnam and Indonesia each have different payment habits, distribution channels, regulatory environments and user expectations. A product built for one market rarely transfers cleanly to another without meaningful adaptation.
This is particularly true for consumer platforms, where local super-apps, payment rails and social distribution channels shape what a viable go-to-market strategy actually looks like far more than the underlying technology does.
Commercialisation before scale
The ventures we get involved with tend to spend more time than expected on commercialisation before pursuing scale: confirming who pays, how they pay, what the realistic customer acquisition cost looks like locally, and whether the business model holds up once local competitors respond.
This is less exciting than a scaling narrative, but it is the difference between a venture that survives its first eighteen months in an Asian market and one that does not.
Where we add value
Our role in technology ventures ranges from early commercial strategy and market entry positioning through to structuring investment and connecting founders with the right regional partners. The common thread is treating Asia as a set of specific, understandable markets rather than a single opportunity to be addressed all at once.
